The advantage of bike lanes for the rider is a clear designated lane on where the rider is suppose to be on a main thorough fare. It affirms the bicycle rider's legal rights to be on the road with vehicular traffic. The perception of safety is also a benefit for a bike rider to stay in his/her lane. The disadvantage for the driver could very well be bicycle lanes, bus lanes, fast lane and slow lane; one more lane one could get a ticket for being… you guessed it in the wrong lane. The disadvantage to the bicycle rider could be a parked car opening a door in front of a rider. I have heard many fatal accidents happen when an unassuming door swings open, knocks the rider off the bike and he/she lands on the busy road, to be hit, banged then crushed by car or truck. For this reason alone, I am not convinced bicycle lanes are a good idea for anyone.
